Growing up between Puerto Rico and the United States, Zayas explored different ways of addressing social determinants of health and food culture. After witnessing the powerful effects of a balanced diet on preventing and managing chronic disease within her family and community, Zayas’ passion for nutrition grew into a public health career. Throughout the past few years, she has sought to combine her love for Puerto Rican and multicultural foodways with food justice, policy and outreach to have a positive impact on communities and the environment through strengthened nutrition programs and effective outreach.
